Repeat customers order using their own numbering, their own abbreviations, or a description inherited from a drawing. None of it matches your catalog text, and all of it is stable over time — which is what makes it learnable.
The scoping matters more than the learning. A cross-reference confirmed for one customer must not apply to another, because the same shorthand routinely means different items to different buyers. A system that learns aliases globally will eventually apply one customer's meaning to another customer's order.
Why it matters on an order desk
FrontBeacon scopes every confirmed alias to the customer whose reviewer confirmed it. One buyer's shorthand cannot contaminate another's.
